Top Ten Dog Breeds in Canada in 2020
One thing I’ve discovered while out in the dog park world is that there are A LOT of dog breeds. I didn’t even know how many there were. And I know Rescue Dog people are also a loyal bunch, as they should be. Animal rescue and pet adoption is a wonderful thing. But let’s not shame the people who love their dog breeds either!
I have a beautiful cream-colored Golden Retriever (BETTY WHITE), and thus, a special place in my heart for them. I can’t look at a Golden Retriever without my heart bubbling up and melting over, like butter in the microwave. I imagine most people feel that way about their dog’s breed.
We also have a rescue dog in our house. Bruce is a sweet old Chihuahua, with the grey hair to prove he’s old. He started his life in a crack house. He moved around a bit but he’s been with us for ten years. As one child proclaimed when he saw Bruce at the dog park, “He looks like he’s wearing a mask.” A white one. Grey Fur for the superpower.
Bruce is an interesting dog. He only eats dog food, like pizza and nacho’s and chicken and ribs. Not the specially made healthy make it yourself dog food. I apologize to everyone for condoning this and allowing it to happen, but hey, he’s 14 years old. He trots around happily, sleeps on our bed, and basically has trained us to do all the things he wants us to do. He uses a litter box and does not leave the comfort of our house in cold or wet weather.
Betty White eats dog food. She believes she is a dog. She’s young, not yet two and demands outside exercise every single day. So, we have a little of both in our house. Two dogs, vastly different, but both loved.
I see all sorts of dogs when I’m out and about with Betty (and Bruce on fair weather days). I see lots of Rescue dogs and owners who love them so much. And dog breeds, who also have loving owners. Dogs are a great companion and are a special addition to a human life!
When I was creating dogs for the GOOD DOG, I LOVE MY MOM series of dog books, I needed to start with the most popular dogs. (We’ll be adding as we go, but we had to start somewhere!)
I wasn’t really surprised by the lists of popular dogs, but I was pleasantly surprised to see what the number one dog breed in Canada is. This information was gathered by Rover.com, and here’s the top 10 most popular dog breeds in Canada for 2020.
Mixed Breeds! We Canadians are good dog people.
2. Labrador Retriever
3. Golden Retriever
4. Shih Tzu
5. German Shepard
8. Yorkshire Terrier
10. French Bulldog
That’s the list. What about Beagles, and Aussie Shepherd, Berense Mountain Dogs, Pugs and Border Collies? I see them everywhere too! Doesn’t mean they aren’t popular. Just means they didn’t make this list.
Did your dog make the list?
